The Scoured Filter-Beds

A tide line runs round the walls at chest height, a clean brown stripe, and above it the brick is dry. By your count it is a chamber of some size, 4 paces by 8. Its middle is square and its arms are narrower, and the whole thing reads like a plan drawn in a hurry. The beds give off a smell of wet clay and cold mud, like a riverbank in winter.
