The Culverted Channel

Plain brick, a service way, with iron rungs set into the wall every few paces for reasons long since bricked over. It is 10 paces long, with one sharp turn where the walls are scuffed at shoulder height. The passage roof is stained dark all along, where water stood against it. Someone has scratched a tally into the wall — 49 marks, the last one shallow, unfinished.

Depth 49.
