The Culverted Pipe-Run

A pipe runs the length of it at knee height, and you step over its brackets every few paces. The passage goes some way and then doglegs; 12 paces in all. The walls were whitewashed once, and the damp has come through in shapes like faces. Somebody has tried to bail the floor here with a bucket; the bucket is still here, and so is the water. A pipe somewhere sings a thin, high note, and stops when you listen for it.
