The Flooded Undercroft

Squat brick piers hold up the vault in rows, and each one stands in its own small pool. This is a small chamber, 4 by 3 paces. It is shaped like a letter T: a long crossbar, and a stem off the middle of it. Soot has blackened the wall and the ceiling above the firebox in a great fan. A pipe has burst along its seam and hangs open like a split reed. A rope is tied to a ring-bolt and lowered into the black water. It is taut.
