The Lime-white Tank

A plank has been laid across a channel and weighted at both ends with stones. Iron tie-rods cross overhead from wall to wall, holding the brick together by main force and weeping rust where they go in. This is a chamber of some size, 7 by 3 paces. A stubby arch joins it to its neighbour, barely longer than it is tall. A stack of iron firebars lies against the wall, each one warped by heat.
