The Shelved Niche

Iron grilles close the lower niches, each one fastened with a small lock, each lock rusted shut. This is a chamber of some size, 5 by 4 paces. Its long wall is interrupted halfway by a wide recess that goes back as far again. A stubby arch joins it to its neighbour, barely longer than it is tall. A blanket has been knitted from many colours of wool, all the scraps that could be found. Every skull in one row has been turned to face the wall. It took patience. A slab shifts somewhere with a grinding sigh, and the quiet afterwards is deeper than before. The smell of oil thickens, as if something very large were near.
