The Culverted Pipe-Run

Plain brick, a service way, with iron rungs set into the wall every few paces for reasons long since bricked over. It keeps on, straight and tight, for 2 paces. A wooden trough along the wall carries a thread of grey water down toward the beds. A line of iron rings is set into the wall at the height of your waist, each stained orange beneath. Someone has scratched a tally into the wall — 59 marks, the last one shallow, unfinished.

Depth 59.
