The Sweating Waterhall

Water trickles behind the brick, loud, then quiet, like a tap turned by an unsteady hand. The echo is wrong: your footsteps come back from further away than the walls. The walls stand 3 paces apart one way and 8 paces the other: a chamber of some size. One corner of it is missing, as if the builders met solid rock and went round. The water in the settling tanks is clear at the top and thick as porridge at the bottom, and nothing has stirred it in years. Someone has built a low wall of stones across a channel to raise the water, and then kicked a gap in it. Someone has scratched a tally into the wall — 59 marks, the last one shallow, unfinished.
