The Patient Corridor

The passage is very quiet and very narrow, and it does not seem meant for company. It keeps on, straight and tight, for 3 paces. A water trough stands by the wall for washing, and a cake of hard soap sits on its rim. Somebody has scratched their own name into a blank slab, and then, it seems, thought better of it. Someone has scratched a tally into the wall — 65 marks, the last one shallow, unfinished.
