The First Turning

The passage bends almost at once, which is the first thing anyone learns about this place: it was not built to be walked in a straight line. The dressed stone of the landing gives out halfway along and the tool marks change hand. Someone has chalked FIRST on the corner, and beneath it, in a different hand, NOT THE LAST.
